With your doctor’s help, you probably understand what LDL (bad) cholesterol is and why it is so important. But your total cholesterol is actually made up of three parts: LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol and triglycerides (trigs).
Trigs are a fat in the blood. They are important because a high triglyceride level combined with high LDL or low HDL is associated with the buildup of fat in the blood. Even if you reach your LDL goal with a statin (medicine to lower cholesterol), you could still have triglycerides that are too high. Do you know your triglyceride level?
